Amarillo's indoor football team officially has a new nickname - the Amarillo Venom. The Venom - formerly the Amarillo Dusters - announced the new nickname Tuesday after conducting several online fan polls. More than 1,000 votes were cast on the Amarillo Globe-News Web site - amarillo.com - with 63 percent in favor of the Venom. "We appreciate everyone's input as we have come to a consensus with our fans of West Texas regarding our new identity," Venom owner Randy Sanders said in a statement. "The Venom symbolizes a sheik, tough look that fans will be proud of." Amarillo native Trace Hannah won the name contest and will receive two season tickets. The team also has a new Web site - govenom.com. The Venom opens the season in the Indoor Football League on March 13 in Odessa against the West Texas Roughnecks. - Globe-News Staff
